Last week, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH) put forth legislation to restore and protect the exercise of Second Amendment rights for Washington D.C. residents.
On March 30, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) suggested the GOP defense of gun rights is a type of “bullying.”
According to The Hill, Norton said this while “expressing concerns” over Rubio and Jordan’s Second Amendment Protection Act of 2015. She said the move to protect the right to keep and bear arms from being infringed actually infringes on “the democratic rights” of D.C. citizens.
She is suggesting that because the gun control measures in D.C. were passed by democratically-elected City Council members and Mayors, undoing those measures is an attack on the democratic process.
Norton also said Rubio and Jordan’s efforts are marred by “hypocrisy” because they are seeking to open up federal buildings in D.C. for concealed carry, while both Florida and Ohio have federal buildings in which guns are not allowed.
She did not note that D.C. is a federal district, not a state. Therefore, federal buildings are the rule rather the exception in D.C., whereas they are the exception rather than the rule in states around the country. Thus, even if concealed carry is barred in federal buildings in a given state, it is still allowable almost everywhere else. But if concealed carry is barred in federal buildings in D.C., it is barred almost everywhere.
Norton said:
Rather than infringe on the democratic rights of the 650,000 District of Columbia residents, I urge [Rubio and Jordan] to turn their attention to the federal ban on guns in federal facilities.
