Kim Kardashian, Lena Dunham, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Russell Brand are just a few of the big names who have dared to face their Twitter critics on national television, but now the popular Jimmy Kimmel “Mean Tweets” segment is going presidential.
President Obama participated in the segment on Thursday night’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live while on a fundraising trip to Southern California.
POTUS made his first in-person appearance on the ABC late night talk show, and now joins a long list of celebrities, athletes, and musicians who have read from some of their most ardent detractors on Twitter, albeit the show picked a few posts for Mr. Obama that are more “PG” than we’re used to seeing.
“I think it’s important to remember that presidents are people, too,” Kimmel said before introducing the segment.
Obama started by reading a tweet from @carold501: “Obama’s hair is looking grayer these days. Can’t imagine why since he doesn’t seem to be one bit worried about all thats going on.”
“Is there any way we could fly Obama to some golf course halfway around the world and just leave him there?” a user said of Obama, while another said, “Somebody send Obama some lifehacks on how to be a good president. haha. like, i bet that would help. lol.”
Obama responded: “You know, the ‘lol’ is redundant when you have the ‘haha.'”
