A new Gallup poll reveals that Americans think the biggest problem facing the country is not terrorism, healthcare, race relations, or immigration – it’s the federal government.
18% of respondents said government was their chief worry, making it the fourth consecutive month that the government has topped the list. The economy ranked second, with 11% of respondents naming it as the most important problem, down from 16% in January. Unemployment finished third at 10%, having risen from 9% in January. Immigration and healthcare each elicited 7% of the vote, while terrorism and education ranked after them at 6%.
31% of respondents said they were satisfied with the direction of the country; during the tenure of Barack Obama, satisfaction has generally ranked between 20% and 35%, much lower than the era of George W. Bush, when satisfaction fluctuated between 71% and 40% until it started to dip in 2006. Gallup’s own summary states, “Meanwhile, satisfaction with the direction of the U.S. remains relatively upbeat compared with figures from recent years, but two-thirds of Americans continue to be dissatisfied.” Gallup is referring to the bulk of the Obama years rating American’s satisfaction at less than 30%.
