On Wednesday, Florida’s House K-12 Education Subcommittee ignored gun control groups like Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and passed Rep. Greg Steube’s (R-Sarasota) armed teachers bill.
Bloomberg-funded Moms Demand Action and Everytown for Gun Safety both oppose the idea of arming teachers for defense of self and of children.
On March 5, Breitbart News reported that Moms Demand Action and Everytown were not only against arming teachers but also against arming women against sexual assault on college campuses. The two groups were running a commercial aimed at lawmakers, suggesting campus sexual assault should be fought with backpacks, not guns.
But Florida lawmakers were not swayed, and voted 12-1 to advance the armed teachers bill out of subcommittee.
According to Sunshine State News, Steube told fellow subcommittee members that his bill requires “rigorous training” for all teachers who will carry guns — and this would include training in how to react to “active shooter” situations.
Rep. Bruce Antone (D-Orlando) shared his concern that teachers who volunteer for training “may not have the discipline… to deal with situations on [Florida] campuses.” Rep. Joe Geller (D-Ventura) said he simply doesn’t “think guns and schools mix.”
Geller believes arming teachers is an “America Sniper” approach that keeps kids safe.
