The Associated Press is warning the federal government that it is considering suing for access to State Department records during Hillary Clinton’s time as secretary of state.
The AP has been stymied in its request for information, such as Clinton’s full calendars and information concerning the special position Clinton gave to long-time aide Huma Abedin–wife of disgraced former Congressman Anthony Weiner.
“We believe it’s critically important that government officials and agencies be held accountable to the voters,” AP’s general counsel, Karen Kaiser, said in a statement. “In this instance, we’ve exhausted our administrative remedies in pursuit of important documents and are considering legal action.”
The AP is not the only organization finding it difficult to get requests for Clinton’s records fulfilled. Groups as diverse as conservative activists Citizens United to left-wing Gawker.com have been finding foot-dragging and obfuscation instead of records coming from the federal government.
The wire service’s threat comes immediately on the heels of revelations that Hillary Clinton used private, non-government email addresses during her tenure at State, a possible violation of the law.
