There’s enough of Hillary Clinton’s political blood in the water to get the sharks excited, judging from the remarks of top Joe Biden supporter Dick Harpootlian in South Carolina. He’s a former Democrat Party chairman of what the Washington Post reminds us is an important primary state:
“There’s always another shoe to drop with Hillary,” Harpootlian said in an interview Wednesday. “Do we nominate her not knowing what’s in those e-mails?… If the e-mails were just her and her family and friends canoodling about fashion and what they’re going to do next week, that’s one thing. But the fact that she’s already turned e-mails to the Benghazi committee because she was doing official business on it means she’s going to die by 1,000 cuts on this one.”
[…] Referencing Biden specifically, he said, “I’ll tell you this: He ain’t got no e-mail problems. He ain’t got no foundation problems. What you see with Joe is what you get. There’s nothing hidden there.”
Harpootlian added, “The chatter down here is, ‘Is this the best we can do?’ Certainly everyone wants to give a woman a chance to lead this country, but is [Clinton] the woman? There are plenty of other women who would be competitive, whether it’s Elizabeth Warren or Amy Klobuchar or Kirsten Gillibrand.”
As the Post observes, all of the women mentioned in Harpootlian’s affirmative-action program for the presidency have ruled out 2016 runs, although who knows if that really means anything at this early stage in the game. A dramatic pose illuminated by the light of the flaming Hillary Hindenburg crashing to the ground would be a perfect way to re-enter the race.
Harpootlian thought the best way for Hillary to manage the crisis was to come clean and “put it to bed,” a suggestion that might prove distinctly unappealing to Clinton based on how much dirty laundry she has tucked away on that private mail server. One might even think he was taunting Hillary by giving her advice he knows she can’t take.
At any rate, the House Select Committee on Benghazi has already stepped forward to help Hillary put this whole nasty business behind her by subpoenaing the emails she’s kept hidden for so long. Won’t it be refreshing to get all this stuff on the table at long last, years after Clinton should have divulged it?
Not too many other Democrats of stature are quite as deep into Hillary Second Thoughts as Harpootlian just yet, but they’re all starting to quietly put down their markers of Deep Concern, so they’ll be able to escape the singularity if Hillary completely implodes. Many ears are cocked for the sound of that next dropping shoe.
This is an excellent time for Democrats to go on the record about how much they love and adore transparency, how important it is for the business of the American people to be conducted in bright sunlight, yadda yadda yadda.
In other news, yes, there are people who think Joe Biden is a serious contender for the presidency.
