Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) was spotted on the red carpet of the Grammys Sunday night in the background of an E! broadcast at the center of the star-studded affair.
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) was also seen, several feet behind the DNC chairwoman.
The pair has taken heat on social media for the appearance, with some calling the display hypocritical as Democrats decry income inequality.
Wasserman Schultz and Jackson Lee were not the only lawmakers in Los Angeles for the Grammys this weekend, however.
“The Congresswoman was in Los Angeles to attend a series of official and political events during Grammys weekend and at the Grammys, where she joined her colleagues on both sides of the aisle in learning more about pressing issues before the music industry as Congress prepares to take up related legislation,” Wasserman Schultz’s spokesman Sean Bartlett explained in an emailed statement to Breitbart News.
Indeed, Politico reports that more than a dozen lawmakers — both Republicans and Democrats — spent the Grammy weekend in Los Angeles to raise money and consider issues related to music copyrighting.
A spokesman for Jackson Lee did not immediately respond to request for comment.
During the Grammys itself, singer Jennifer Hudson announced a new lobbying group aimed at pushing for fair pay for music.
“Tonight, we are proud to launch the Grammy Creators Alliance, a coalition of many artists — some of whom you see right here at the Grammys,” she said. “Together, we will advise those who make policy in music and in government so that our next generation of creators are able to make tomorrow’s music as great as tonight’s.”
