Virginia GOP Rejects Terry McAuliffe’s ‘Dubious’ Domestic Violence Gun Control Push

On February 5, the GOP-controlled House Militia, Police, and Public Safety subcommittee rejected Governor Terry McAuliffe’s “dubious” domestic violence gun control push.

Richmond.com reports that this push meant “forcing anyone subject to a protective order to surrender their firearms within 24 hours.” Another proposal–also rejected–revamped requirements for obtaining a concealed carry license.

Lori Haas, Virginia director of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, suggested the GOP’s actions “may cost some women their lives.” She said: “The data is just so very clear when a firearm is introduced into a domestic violence situation, the outcomes are lethal more often times than not.”

However, subcommittee member C. Todd Gilbert (R-Shenandoah) does not agree. He referred to McAuliffe’s gun control push as an “illogical and dubious…effort to find emotional arguments to advance the ball so [gun control proponents] can get to their ultimate goal, which is serious restrictions on law-abiding people.”

On January 26, Breitbart News reported that two of McAuliffe’s gun control proposals–a one-handgun-a-month purchase limit and new gun show regulations–were rejected as well.
