The push to put more good guys with guns in schools to dissuade and counter bad guys with guns has re-emerged and is expanding at the state level around the country.
In 2014 Missouri lawmakers overrode Governor Jay Nixon’s (D) veto to allow teachers in that state to carry guns on campus for defense of self and of students. Georgia Governor Nathan Deal (R) signed that state’s Safe Carry Protection Act, extending the possibility for concealed carry on campus to teachers as well. Idaho did this on a college and university level by opening campuses up for concealed carry by students, faculty, and staff who possess an “enhanced concealed carry permit.”
On January 15, 2015, Arkansas state representative Charlie Collins (R-Fayetteville) proposed legislation to allow concealed carry by faculty and staff at state colleges and universities. Florida state representative Greg Steube (R-Sarasota) introduced similar legislation for his state in January as well.
Now US News reports that Colorado, North Dakota, and Wyoming are all moving closer to passing legislation to “peel back limits” on concealed carry on K-12 campuses throughout their states.
North Dakota state representative Dwight Kiefert (R) sponsored the campus carry bill in his state because he believes it provides “schools… more options for protection.”
In Colorado the push for concealed carry on campus is being spearheaded by state representative Patrick Neville (R-Castle Rock). On February 2 Breitbart News reported that Neville is a former Columbine student who was at the school when it was attacked in April 1999. He says that experience taught him “that criminals are not deterred by a flashy sign at the door.” He added: “The only thing that is going to stop murderers intent on doing harm is to give good people the legal authority to carry a gun to protect themselves and our children.”
