In another story in a series of parents leaving infants in the freezing cold while they cavorted somewhere else, a 26-year-old Connecticut woman allegedly left her two-week-old son outside in the car while she went shopping in a sex store with her male friend.
According to police, Lindsay Hoffmann, who had once been arrested for prostitution, tried to enter a sex store called “VIP” with her baby son and her friend Marquette Riggsbeemom, but the Southington store refused to let the baby enter.
Hoffman allegedly returned to the car in the 29-degree cold and placed the baby, dressed in a onesie without a hat or mittens, back in the 1997 Nissan Sentra. An employee of the sex store notified police, who arrived 20 minutes after the baby was left in the car. The Smoking Gun reported that police said the baby’s core temperature was “found to be adequate but it did have cold extremities.”
VIP District Manager Tina Marchese, interviewed by WFSB, said, “He was just in a normal onesie – no hat, hands exposed. It really affected us because we are all mothers so it was a really sad thing for the baby.” She also said that the couple continued to shop even after knowing the police had been called.
After an examination at a local hospital, the boy was deemed healthy, and then taken into custody by the Department of Children and Families.
The couple was charged with risk of injury to a minor and leaving a child unsupervised; they were held in jail until $25,000 bail could be posted.
The Connecticut case follows the recent arrest of a wealthy Washington, D.C. couple who left their two small children in the car in 28-degree weather while they went wine-tasting.
