The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is asking anyone in the Phoenix area with measles symptoms to not attend Sunday’s Super Bowl between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks.
There are reportedly seven confirmed measles cases in Arizona as a result of the Disneyland outbreak, which was determined to have come from outside the country. According to Yahoo News, health officials “in three Phoenix-area counties — Maricopa, Pinal and Gila — have already asked that anyone who has not been vaccinated for measles and may have been exposed to the virus stay home from school or work during the 21-day incubation period.”
Anne Schuchat of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention “asked that anyone with symptoms of the virus please stay home and not attend the Super Bowl on Sunday.”
On Sunday on CBS’s Face the Nation, Tom Friedan, the director of the Centers for Disease Control, said he was “very concerned by the growing number of people who are susceptible to measles, and the possibility that we could have a large outbreak in this country as a result.”
Officials expect that at least one million people will have interacted at “activities this week connected to the Super Bowl” and the Phoenix Open golf tournament.
