President Obama Warns India: Obesity A ’Worldwide Epidemic’

In India, President Obama joined Prime Minister Modi for a joint radio address and took questions from the audience.

During the event one questioner asked about First Lady Michelle Obama’s campaign against obesity and whether she would work to combat it in India as well.

“We’re seeing a worldwide epidemic of obesity, in many cases starting at a very young age,” Obama warned, praising the First Lady for her efforts.

Obama also warned the Indian people against processed foods.

“Part of it has to do with the increase in processed foods, not naturally prepared,” he said, adding that it was important to exercise as well.

“Part of it is the lack of activity for too many children,” he warned. “And once they’re on this path, it can lead to a lifetime of health challenges.”

Obama indicated that he would continue working to improve public health around the world — even after he leaves office.

“[I]f children are sick, they can’t concentrate in school and they fall behind. It has a huge economic impact on the countries involved,” he said. “And so we think that there’s a lot of progress to be made here, and I’m very excited about the possibilities of continuing this work even after I leave office.”
