Hyphernkemberly Dorvilier, 22, of Pemberton, New Jersey, is due in court after allegedly dousing her newborn child with WD-40 and setting her alight in the middle of a New Jersey road.
Neighbors called police Friday night after seeing Dorvillier light a bundle on fire in the middle of the road. Dave Joseph, 45, pinned the suspect to the ground as Dorvillier insisted she was burning dog feces. She also allegedly claimed that the burning baby wasn’t hers.
The newborn, wrapped in a smoldering towel with an umbilical cord and placenta still attached, suffered third degree burns over 60 percent of her body. Police found her alive — but she died from her horrific injuries two hours later at a nearby hospital.
Investigators found splashes of blood trailing from Dorvillier’s home. She continued to bleed at the hospital where emergency medical technicians tried to save her newborn’s life.
Dorvillier’s mother and sister, who live with her in Pemberton, NJ, said that they did not know Hyphernkemberly had given birth, but would not say whether she had an attorney. Dorvillier is being held on $500,000 bond.
Third degree burns, also referred to as “full thickness burns,” are among the most excruciating injuries a human being can endure. They destroy both the soft, outer layer of skin and the protected layers beneath, along with hair follicles. The remaining skin blisters — as fluid leaks from the capillaries; what remains turns hard and leathery. The large burns the newborn baby suffered would have required her to undergo extensive skin grafting and countless surgeries, had she survived. No news report indicate she was ever named, or was held, comforted, or fed during her hours-long life.
