MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina — Neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson tells Breitbart News that he’s seriously considering launching a White House bid in 2016. Carson says that if he runs, he’ll do so as an outsider, not as a politician.
“I am certainly thinking about it and putting together some infrastructure and listening carefully as I travel around the country,” Carson said in an interview at the South Carolina Tea Party Coalition Convention before his speech on Sunday afternoon.
“People are very concerned about the future,” Carson continued, when asked for his thoughts on why more than a thousand people came to Myrtle Beach.
They’re concerned about what’s going to happen to their children and grandchildren. They’re also worried about whether or not we’re going to differentiate from standard political nothingness, which has been going on from both parties for quite some time. I think this is an opportunity to offer something that’s different, that’s clear, that’s bold, that will lead us back to a point that had America moving in a very good direction for a long time.
To the hundreds of thousands of activists nationwide who are pushing him to run for president, Carson said his message is that, “God’s will is going to be carried out.”
“I’m going to be listening very carefully to the people of this nation,” Carson said. “If I do decide to run, and again I think the chances are pretty strong, I’m not going to run as a politician. I’m going to run as an American citizen, because again this country is supposed to be about ‘We The People’ not around ‘We The Political Class,’ not around ‘We The Politicians’ and not around ‘We The Government.’”
A big focus of his campaign would be fixing the economy. “Fixing the economy is not going to be nearly as difficult as many people make it out to be,” Carson said.
The economy is still percolating along. All of the things that we have already against it right now tells you that it’s a strong basic economy. With some changes of our tax structure to make it fair and incentivize people to work, and with the removal of unnecessary regulations, we can create an environment that is conducive to innovation and hard work and responsibility and things that made America into a great nation. Those things are easily reproduced.
Carson also said that President Barack Obama is largely unpopular nationwide because of the fact he ran as a Washington outsider who would change politics back in 2008, but has since turned out to be nothing more than just a regular career politician.
“Obviously there was a lot of optimism about him in the beginning because he said the right things,” Carson said of Obama. “If he lived based on what he said, we’d be in very good shape. But obviously he was a typical politician simply making promises and trying to strengthen his base. I think that’s one of the things that’s turned off so many people. It’s probably why 93 million people didn’t vote in 2012. There’s a lot of Americans out there who I think could be recruited to come back in and be active again and to be a part of the resurgence of this country.”
