The Pitbull-listening, hip hop-loving Marco Rubio may actually run for president in 2016, 2020, or 2024, but before he does, Miami’s favorite hijo (son) may first run for governor of Florida.
The talk that Rubio is “well-positioned to run for governor in 2018″ is old news. In a soon-to-be-released book on Hispanic politics, talk of Rubio running for governor of Florida has been discussed as far back as 2009.
Word is that Rubio is not all that fond of the U.S. Senate, especially with the travel and time away from his family that is part of the job, and is contemplating a gubernatorial run in 2018.
Why not run for governor in 2018?
Aside from the self-inflicted immigration reform political gunshot wound to his foot, which has caused him to bleed a lot of conservative grassroots support, Rubio’s conservative track record is impeccable, and the fact that he can raise national fundraising dollars really helps with whichever race he decides to enter.
But before he runs for governor in 2018, Rubio must first decide on whether he will run for president in 2016, re-election to the U.S. Senate, or neither.
Strangely enough, and I don’t know if I can give this much credence, but word is that Rubio’s wife and family have signed off on him running for president.
If Rubio runs for president, he can all but say goodbye to coaching his son’s football games and taking long strolls along the beach with his wife, as well as taking the boat down to the Florida Keys.
Just his Senate schedule is taxing enough on his family, but throw into the mix his regular Reclaim American PAC schedule, a grueling non-stop presidential campaign, and those boat outings, along with the walks on beach and coaching pee wee football will not be the only thing he will be parting ways with.
The Herald story also states that Rubio’s next move could effect the plans of members of Governor Rick Scott’s cabinet, and it will.
There is no secret that CFO Jeff Atwater and AG Commissioner Adam Putnam want to govern the state of Florida but now have to wait for Rick Scott’s second term in office to be up in 2018.
Do you see how a possible Rubio run for governor would affect these two seasoned politicos’ future gubernatorial plans?
What Rubio does in anyone’s guess. Rubio may have already decided that he will not run for president in 2016 and is just riding the political hype wave so that he can sell more of his upcoming book.
Then again, Rubio may run for president, sustain that hype, sell more books, and wait until he has to officially announce his U.S. Senate re-election bid in the spring of 2016.
A Marco vs. Jeb Republican presidential primary in 2016 will suck all the air out of that race, as the media will all but shift their attention to the Goliath vs. Goliath Florida presidential primary showdown between these two friends.
If it comes to that, whomever wins Florida will be the GOP presidential nominee in 2016.
In closing, everyone needs to relax. Whomever decides to run for president in 2016 will have to make his or her decision within the next six months or so.
Until then, wannabee politicos around Florida and those who think they are the “Wizards of Smart” of politics need to take a step back from the medicinal marijuana bong.
Rubio is getting the last laugh.
