An Arizona State University Campus police officer—cleared of wrongdoing in arresting English professor Ersula Ore on May 20, 2014—has now been told ASU will terminate him “effective January 21.”
The arrest drew national attention when video was released of Ore arguing with Officer Stewart Ferrin after he stopped her jaywalking and obstructing a roadway. The video shows Ore resisting arrest by literally fighting the officer to keep him from handcuffing her.
It eventually took two officers to gain control of Ore and restrain her. She pleaded guilty to resisting arrest and was sentenced to 9 months probation. But she filed a complaint, saying the arrest has changed things. Ore said: “I’m not as brave as I once was. I’m not as free, I’m not as comfortable… I’m not me.”
Ore kicked Ferrin in the leg while he was trying to restrain her. He then took her to the ground, which her attorney described as “excessive force” and a violation of Ore’s “civil rights.”
Yahoo News reports that a probe by ASU police found “claims of excessive force” and “civil rights” violation were “unfounded.” The FBI also investigated the possibility of civil rights infractions and found no grounds on which to charge Ferrin.
Ferrin has been on administrative leave since July following the incident and has now been informed that ASU will terminate him effective January 21.
