President Obama has sped up the release of detainees from Guantanamo Bay since the November midterm elections, in which Republicans made historic gains in Congress.
On November 5, the day after the elections, Fouzi Khalid Abdullah al Awda was transferred to Kuwait, the first of twenty-two detainees released in the past two months.
According to the New York Times, al Awda was the first transfer to be released from the prison as a result of a new set of review hearings.
Two others were transferred to Slovakia on November 20 as well as three other detainees to the country of Georgia.
On December 7, six detainees were transferred to Uruguay and four more were transferred to Afghanistan on December 20.
Yesterday, December 30, five detainees were transferred to Kazakhstan.
Only six other inmates were released before the mid-term elections in 2014, according to a New York Times timeline, five of which were transferred to Qatar in May due to the prisoner swap for U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.
