On Saturday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-NV) communications director Adam Jentleson tweeted that Reid filed cloture on the nomination of Obama’s gun control-supporting Surgeon General nominee Vivek Murthy.
Jentleson indicated a “confirmation vote will be early next week.”
Last week, Breitbart News reported that Democrats were trying to confirm Murthy as surgeon general before they lose control of the Senate at year’s end. On the one hand, Murthy has the best chance for confirmation now, while Democrat rule changes still allow confirmation by a simple majority. On the other, Politico reports that his confirmation is a long shot due to “queasiness among Republicans and moderate Democrats about Murthy’s positions on guns.”
On October 12, the Los Angeles Times reported that Murthy’s believes “guns are a public health issue.” The Times then indicated that if confirmed, Murthy could campaign against firearms the way C. Everett Koop “[campaigned] against smoking.”
