Darrell Issa Subpoenas Jonathan Gruber’s Obamacare Documents, Including Contracts and Work Product

Representative Darrell Issa (R-CA), Chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, is issuing a subpoena demanding MIT economics professor Jonathan Gruber produce all documents related to his Obamacare consulting work for the federal government and any state governments.

Gruber refused to produce these documents or answer any questions concerning them when he testified before the committee on Tuesday. At the time, Issa warned Gruber that he would issue a subpoena for the documents if the professor failed to produce them voluntarily. On Friday, Issa made good on that promise.

“As one of the architects of ObamaCare, Jonathan Gruber is in a unique position to shed light on the ‘lack of transparency’ surrounding the passage of the President’s health care law, however he has so far been unwilling to fully comply with the Oversight Committee’s repeated requests,” Chairman Issa said in the committee’s news release.

“This week,” Issa added,  “Dr. Gruber repeatedly refused to answer several key questions, including the amount of taxpayer funds he received for his work on ObamaCare. The American people deserve not just an apology, but a full accounting, which Dr. Gruber must provide.”

The subpoena calls for:

1. All documents and communications to or from any federal, state, or local government employee, including, but not limited to, any document or communication referring or relating to the Affordable Care Act or federal and state health care exchanges.

2. All documents and communications referring or relating to funding, for research or otherwise, from any federal, state, or local government agency, including, but not limited to, any contract(s) with a federal, state, or local government agency.

3. All documents and communications referring or relating to work product produced to any federal, state, or local government agency, for any purpose, including, but not limited to, the results of any and all economic models or simulations.

As Breitbart News reported last month, Gruber made an estimated $5.2 million from Obamacare-related contracts with the federal government and at least 12 state governments between 2009 and 2014. The subpoena not only requires all documents from Gruber’s 2009 sole source $392,600 contract with the federal government, it also requires documents from his current contract with the state of Vermont, and previous contracts with 11 other state governments, including Minnesota, Colorado, Oregon, Michigan, Maine, Connecticut, California, West Virginia, Delaware, Kansas, and Wisconsin.

Vermont State Auditor Douglas Hoffer has already requested information and documents related to Gruber’s billing practices in his $280,000 contract with the state of Vermont, but as of Monday has received none of the documents or information requested from either Gruber or state officials.

Breitbart News asked Gruber for comment on Friday, but has not yet received a response.
