How does Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson know that President Obama’s executive amnesty is legal? He’s a lawyer of course.
Without offering much clarity, Johnson repeatedly cited his long career as a lawyer as proof that Obama’s actions were, in fact, fully legal. When asked about Obama’s past comments calling such actions illegal, Johnson dismissed the comments, also citing his career as a lawyer as the reason for his confidence.

Since the 1980s, Johnson has served as a lawyer both in private and public practice.
He’s worked as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, as Air Force General Counsel for President Bill Clinton, as a special counsel for the John Kerry presidential campaign, and as both a transition team lawyer for President-Elect Obama and as the Department of Defense General Counsel for the Obama administration.
Johnson also served as a trial lawyer in the private practice as part of the law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, LLP.
While at the Department of Defense he was described as the “drone lawyer” for the Obama administration and worked on the legal case for the end of “don’t ask, don’t tell.”
Johnson was confirmed as the Secretary of Homeland Security in 2013 after Secretary Janet Napolitano resigned.
