President Obama awarded the Medal of Freedom to several Americans today, including musician Stevie Wonder and actress Meryl Streep.
Obama introduced Streep during the ceremony, noting that it was the “third or fourth” award that she had received since he was in office.
“I have said it publicly, I love Meryl Streep. I love her, ” Obama joked. “Her husband knows I love her, Michelle knows I love her, and there is nothing either of them can do about it.”
Obama generated nervous laughter in the audience, as Streep threw up her hands in response.
Obama praised her for her work as an actress, including mastering “every accent under the sun.” He also praised her for working as an advocate for women and girls throughout the world.
“Meryl is truly one of America’s leading ladies,” Obama stated.
