Bachmann, King in Texas Border Town Devastated by Illegal Immigration: Looks Like ‘World War II After a Bombing’

ROMA, Texas — Standing on a cliff looking over the Rio Grande river in this border town, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) notes the buildings behind us on the American side–largely abandoned, run-down houses and a seemingly abandoned local chamber of commerce outpost–look like they’ve been ravaged by war.

“This looks like it’s post-World War II, like after a bombing,” Bachmann said while Breitbart News and CNN accompanied her and Rep. Steve King (R-IA) to an outpost on the border where illegal immigration and drug cartel crime runs rampant. “We don’t see people living here, but they told us these are stash houses for the drug cartels. You wouldn’t want to be here after dark.”

King and Bachmann headed down here the day after President Barack Obama announced his long-planned executive amnesty for upwards of 5 million illegal aliens. They met with Border Patrol and local law enforcement on the border trip, which was designed to show the American people the damage to American communities thanks to illegal immigration and lawlessness on the border that the president is encouraging with amnesty.

The two fiercely conservative lawmakers are rallying the American people to pressure their members of Congress to block Obama’s amnesty. They’re leading a rally on Capitol Hill when Congress comes back after Thanksgiving and calling on Americans to “melt the phone lines” to their lawmakers, demanding they don’t pass an omnibus spending bill–and use Congress’s power of the purse to block Obama’s amnesty.

“Congressman King and I were very concerned for people across the United States about whether anyone was pushing back,” Bachmann told Breitbart News as several vehicles filled with people and potentially drugs circled dirt road paths on the Mexican side of the border, seemingly waiting for the two members of Congress and two news outlets to leave so they could carry on with business as usual.

“So that’s why we’re meeting with the Border Patrol but also we want to let the American people know that yes we are pushing back but we can’t do it alone,” Bachmann said.

We need them. That’s why we’re inviting people to the rally on Dec. 3 at high noon on the Capitol steps. It was profoundly powerful when the American people did it with Obamacare, and nothing scares politicians more than seeing the whites of their constituents’ eyes. We want real people to come in and demand of their U.S. senators and demand of their representatives: Are you going to vote to defund Obama’s illegal amnesty? We’re going to have a Wall of Fame and Wall of Shame on who’s going to vote which way. We’re asking people to melt the phone lines. It doesn’t do a lot of good to call now because Congress is virtually shut down for the next week. But from Dec. 1 to Dec. 12, that’s our window of opportunity. I really think we can put the pressure on Republicans to pass a bill to defund.

Across from this exact cliff where we stood on Friday afternoon, just a few months ago Bachmann herself shot video of a pregnant woman hopping in a raft to cross the Rio Grande illegally into the U.S. That woman was apprehended by Border Patrol agents when she crossed–and Bachmann said federal agents on site told her she was a decoy to allow drug smugglers to sneak across at a nearby point while the preoccupied Border Patrol agents dealt with the pregnant woman.

“The pregnant mother that was put off on the side here, she is surely in the United States–and asked for asylum in the United States,” King told us here on Friday, the day after Obama’s amnesty announcement. “She surely had the baby. That little baby is an American citizen. And last night, Barack Obama gave that little baby’s mother amnesty. Lawless unconstitutional amnesty.”

King said the reason why the president is doing the executive amnesty is part of an effort to box Congress in, and politically force the nation’s legislative body to pass some kind of amnesty like the Senate’s “Gang of Eight” bill.

“Here’s what this works out to be: The president wants the Gang of Eight bill,” King said.

The Gang of Eight bill is instantaneous, perpetual and retroactive amnesty–meaning that anyone who got into America who’s not a felon and the president doesn’t think is a threat to our society–that doesn’t include all felons. Anyone who gets into America gets to stay. Anybody who would come into America there’s no prospect that the law is going to be applied against them unless they commit a felony or serious crime. And anybody who got deported in the past, under the Gang of Eight bill, gets to reapply to come back. That’s the “we really didn’t mean it” clause. So the president went as far as he could go according to his legal advisers last night, deeply into the Gang of Eight bill.”
