The Catholic Archbishop of Detroit has cancelled a speech by the founder of a Catholic LGBT-rights group at odds with Catholic teaching.
Archbishop Allen Vigneron cancelled the appearance of Francis DeBernardo, executive director of something called New Ways Ministry, a pressure group that rejects the teaching of the Catholic Church on homosexuality. New Ways Ministry was founded by a Catholic nun and a priest, both of whom were censured by the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith for their heterodox views on homosexuality.
DeBernardo was supposed to speak at an annual conference organized by a group called Fortunate Families. A spokesman for Archbishop Vigneron said, “It was brought to the archdiocese’s attention a few weeks back that New Ways Ministry had been scheduled to speak at Christ the King Church. Because New Ways Ministry had been identified as a group that might cause confusion in regards to Catholic Church teaching, the archdiocese did clarify that a presentation by New Ways Ministry should not be hosted on church property.”
The pastor of the Church, Father Victor Clore, who was to sponsor the now cancelled appearance, fired back, “I’ll give you a quote from one of my parishioners, who said: ‘It amazes me how Pope Francis eagerly and happily engages those who openly deny the divinity of Christ, yet (New Ways) DeBernardo is deemed unworthy to enter our church.’ That is pretty much my feeling, too.”
