Luis Gutierrez: Americans Disapprove of Exec Amnesty Because They ‘Have Not Been Explained’ What It Is

Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) claims that a strong plurality of Americans do not support President Barack Obama’s executive amnesty because they are in the dark about the specifics of what Obama will do and what executive amnesty is. 

An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll found that 48% of Americans disapprove of Obama’s executive amnesty. Republicans opposed to it have vowed to prohibit Obama from using federal funds to enact unlawful grants of amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants. When asked about the poll on Wednesday’s The Ed Show on MSNBC, Gutierrez refused to see the poll numbers as a strong sign that Americans do not want Obama to act unilaterally.

“The American people have not been explained what kind of executive authority and what the implications are for tens of millions of American families across the nation,” he said. Gutierrez added that “those numbers are going to go up” once Obama explains his executive amnesty, which Gutierrez said will take “courage.” 

Obama will make a prime-time announcement from the White House on Thursday evening in which he will reportedly grant executive amnesty to as many as five million illegal immigrants. He will further explain his executive amnesty at a campaign rally in Las Vegas, Nevada on Friday. 

A Polling Company exit poll of the midterm electorate found that 74% disapproved of Obama’s executive amnesty while another 80% did not want foreigners taking jobs from Americans and foreigners already in the country. Gutierrez, who has been one of the most vocal pro-amnesty advocates, has said that Obama owes the Latino community “interest” in the form of a bigger and broader executive amnesty after he missed his self-imposed “by the end of the summer” deadline.
