Republican Diane Douglas won the state superintendent’s race in Arizona running on an anti-Common Core platform.

As the Arizona Republic reports, Douglas kept a “low profile” against Democrat David Garcia.

“I think the parents of Arizona have heard the message and they’ve spoken at the polling place,” she said when it appeared the results were optimistic for her campaign.

Douglas has said that the Common Core standards initiative is essentially federal overreach, and campaigned on a promise to have them repealed.

As Breitbart News reported previously, in May Arizona withdrew from the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC), one of the two federally funded test consortia that are developing assessments aligned with the controversial standards. The state had originally adopted the Common Core in 2010, and then essentially “rebranded” them as the Arizona College and Career Ready Standards.

KTAR News observed on Monday that the Arizona state Board of Education chose a new student assessment – the AzMERIT from the American Institutes for Research – to replace its AIMS test.
