Democrats Saying Racism Makes 2014 a 'Ferguson Election'

In a last ditch effort to bring voters to the polls, Democrats are hoping to make the midterm elections about racism and Ferguson.

Some African American activists are hoping that Ferguson will be the focus of this year’s election, claiming that the riots in the Missouri town occurred because not enough blacks voted in past elections, leaving the city with too many white people in government.

At the Daily Beast, Joshua DuBois reports on several get out the vote efforts meant to increase turnout among African Americans in an election that many expect will see low turnout among minorities.

DuBois doesn’t mention it, but there are far more than the few race-based efforts he writes about. Democrats in North Carolina, for instance, are sending out fliers invoking lynching and warning that if Republicans win they will impeach Obama.

Additionally, Democrats in Georgia are distributing flyers evoking the Michael Brown shooting and implying that whites are racist against African Americans.

One can excuse media personality Tavis Smiley when he says that it might seem pointless to black Americans to vote. Smiley recently said that “if you’re black or brown, other than helping to save the Democrats’ hide,” voting is doing nothing to address the African American community’s problems.
