The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said Thursday that the first Dallas nurse to contract the Ebola virus while treating a Liberian man who later died will be transferred to a research center in Bethesda, Maryland.
According to the Washington Post, Nina Pham, 26, will be transferred to the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda from Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, said Dr. Anthony Fauci.
Pham, who is reportedly in good condition and states she is “doing reasonably well,” tested positive last weekend for the deadly disease. She had been treating Thomas Eric Duncan, a Liberian national who travelled to Dallas from his country and contracted Ebola. Duncan died last week.
Another nurse, Amber Vinson, 29, also tested positive this week. Vinson was a passenger on a commercial flight one day before showing symptoms on Tuesday.
Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) said NIH’s director told him the Bethesda facility is well equipped to care for Pham without endangering the rest of the community, according to the Washington Times.
“I’m confident that all necessary steps and precautions will be taken to treat this patient and prevent the further spread of the disease,” Van Hollen said.
