MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough, a longtime advocate of a presidential run by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, revealed that establishment Republicans no longer have faith in Christie’s ability to win a presidential race in 2016.
Scarborough explained that growing doubts in Republican circles swirled about Christie’s record as governor and his temperament.
Scarborough added that Mitt Romney could likely sense the uncertainty among Republicans, which is why he could potentially see himself running for president again.
Mika Brzezinski reported that Christie’s popularity hit a low point in a new Rutgers/Eagleton poll. Forty-five percent of registered voters rated him unfavorably, while only 42 percent gave him a favorable rating.
TIME‘s Mark Halperin agreed, pointing out that establishment Republicans didn’t think Christie could withstand a campaign against Hillary Clinton.
“A lot of these other Republican elites are really wary of him getting in early, tying up some donors, and being too big to stop,” Halperin explained.
