Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA) voted for Senator Joe Manchin’s (D-WV) failed gun control bill in April 2013 and is endorsed by gun control proponent Michael Bloomberg, but she is claiming pro-gun status in her bid for a fourth term in the Senate.
According to the Shreveport Times, Landrieu’s campaign is trying to put distance between the Senator and her gun control vote by pointing to other votes she “cast favoring gun ownership.”
And after the NRA released an ad questioning Landrieu’s commitment to gun rights, Landrieu released the following statement:
I have consistently voted to allow individuals to carry a concealed weapon for self-defense, prevent the federal government from creating a national gun registry and voted not to allow the government to seize firearms during and after a disaster.
The problem with this statement is that, to be enforceable, Manchin’s gun control bill–the bill that Landrieu voted for–would have required the creation of a national gun registry. Breitbart News reported this just days before Manchin’s bill failed to pass. Since that time, states with universal background checks, such as California, have begun to require registration of both long guns and hand guns so that the state government knows where every gun is located.
