Director of the Secret Service Julia Pierson has resigned after days of controversy after a fence jumper breached security and made it into the East Room at the White House.

The news came Wednesday afternoon after a series of lawmakers called for her resignation.

House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi echoed Cummings recommendation during a press conference held today.

After her comments the White House Press Briefing was postponed until later in the afternoon.

“Today Julia Pierson, the Director of the United States Secret Service, offered her resignation, and I accepted it. I salute her 30 years of distinguished service to the Secret Service and the Nation,” noted Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said in a statement to reporters.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said that President Obama spoke with Pierson over the phone to thank her for her service.

Recent reports detailing security failures by the Secret Service led to her resignation, Earnest explained.
