On Friday, President Barack Obama announced the federal government will not deport Liberian nationals who overstayed their visas back to their country, which has been ravaged by Ebola.
According to the Associated Press, immigrants from Liberia who are now illegal immigrants after overstaying their visas will be protected under “deferred enforced departure,” a program that “has been in place for more than a decade.”
The first “deferred enforced departure” program, which was put in place during Liberia’s civil wars in the 1990s, reportedly “expired in October, 2007.” President George W. Bush then approved of another “deferred enforced departure” for Liberians, which Obama extended on Friday.
As Breitbart News has noted, nearly 40% of the country’s illegal immigrants are visa overstays.
