Poll: More Dems Upset Party Too Willing to Legalize Illegals

More Democrats are upset that the party is too willing to legalize illegal immigrants than angry that Democrats are too unwilling to support a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrations.

A new Pew Research poll found that 21% of Democrats “fault their party for being too willing to allow legal status for people here illegally” while 20% blame the party for “being too unwilling to allow them legal status.”

The poll found that while “four-in-ten Hispanic Democrats (40%) think the party is not doing a good job on this issue and say it is not willing enough to allow legal status,” only “17% of white Democrats and 13% of black Democrats” are complaining that Democrats are not pushing harder to allow illegal immigrants to remain in the country. A recent New York Times/CBS poll, which was consistent with two prior national polls, found that a plurality of Americans (39%) would be less likely to support a candidate who supports a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants.

Massive illegal immigration would lower the wages of blue-collar white Democrats and black Democrats, and that may explain why Senate Democrats begged President Barack Obama to delay his executive amnesty until after the midterm elections to help Democrats preserve the Senate. U.S. Civil Rights Commissioner Peter Kirsanow has urged the Congressional Black Caucus, for instance, to reject massive amnesty legislation because of the detrimental impact it would have on black workers.

The poll found that “about as many Democrats and Democratic leaners say the party is not doing a good job (44%) on immigration as say that it is (47%),” which includes a majority of Hispanic Democrats (52%).

The survey, conducted Sept. 2-9, 2014 among 2,002 adults, included “913 Democrats and Democratic leaners” for the Democratic sample.
