Chairman Darrell Issa of the House Oversight Committee has called for an investigative hearing after a man jumped the fence outside the White House and made it inside the unlocked front door before the Secret Service stopped him.
The man, later identified as 42-year-old Army veteran Omar J. Gonzalez, was carrying “a small folding knife” as he hurdled the fence on Friday. His car contained two hatchets, a machete, and 800 rounds of ammunition.
“These significant security breaches reveal our weaknesses, as well as our response capabilities to our nation’s enemies,” said Chairman Issa in a statement announcing the hearing. “I look forward to hearing from Secret Service Director Pierson, in light of scandals ranging from the Salahis to Cartagena, about what steps the agency is taking under her leadership to improve security and put an end to dangerous embarrassments.”
The committee has invited Secret Service Director Julia Pierson to testify at the hearing, which will take place on Tuesday, September 30.
