Gun control proponent Gabby Giffords is running an ad in Arizona targeting Republican congressional candidate Martha McSally’s full-throated defense of the Second Amendment.
The ad accuses McSally of supporting a so-called “gun show loophole” because McSally does not think more gun laws are necessary. Moreover, McSally does not believe opposing more gun laws is the same as supporting “a loophole.” Rather, she sees it as supporting “freedom.”
According to AZ Central, McSally was asked about the “gun show loophole” in March 2012. She responded:
It’s not a loophole. It’s the law. I mean the law is clearly based on the Second Amendment that we all have the right to keep and bear arms. And I have the right as a private citizen to sell my possession to anyone I want to. It’s my lawful right. So, just like I sell my car, I can sell my gun. And so, that’s the law. And it’s not a loophole. It’s freedom.
Ironically, Elliot Rodger (Santa Barbara gunman), Ivan Lopez (2014 Fort Hood gunman), Darion Marcus Aguilar (Maryland mall gunman), Paul Ciancia (LAX gunman), Aaron Alexis (DC Navy Yard gunman), James Holmes (Aurora theater gunman), Jared Loughner (2011 Tucson gunman), and Nidal Hasan (2009 Fort Hood gunman) all passed background checks to acquire their firearms.
