The national media has been focused intently on the unrest going on in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, Missouri, this week, and some reports noted that two people were shot during the rioting over the weekend. However, during that same weekend 29 African Americans were wounded and 7 were killed in the all-too-common gang violence in Chicago.
Between Friday evening and Sunday night, seven were killed, most in the sort of gang violence often fueled by the drug trade controlled by the Mexican cartels. Twenty-nine were injured.
Among those killed, one 26-year-old was found dead on the sidewalk with a gunshot to the head when police arrived. Two more were killed as they sat in a car in the Logan Square neighborhood. Another, a 16-year-old, was shot and killed as well.
Two were killed in an incident of domestic violence in the Roseland community when a man shot and killed his wife then turned the gun on himself. The enraged husband also shot his sister-in-law, but she was not killed.
The weekend ushered in Friday evening was preceded by shootings Thursday in which nine were shot and one killed.
Meanwhile, the CEO of the Chicago-based company ArrowStreamis progressing well in his recovery.
CEO Steve LaVoie was shot in the head by a disgruntled employee in July, but according to his wife, the man is beginning to show signs of recovery. “Each day he looks more like himself,” she said.
