Poll: 83 Percent Say English Should be Official U.S. Language

The vast majority of Americans believe that English should be the official language of the United States, according to a new poll. 

A Rasmussen poll released Wednesday found that 83 percent of Americans say English should be the official language of the United States, while 10 percent did not. 

“The U.S. government has yet to take that step, even though Americans still strongly believe English should be the nation’s officially recognized language. Most also agree overwhelmingly that it’s important to know the language to get ahead in today’s world,” Rasmussen explained.

The poll comes as five states have considered making English their official language this year. There are 31 states to date that include English as their official language, according to the Washington Post. 

The Washington Post reported this week that Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia have measures this year to that end.

Wednesday’s poll gauged sentiment for English as the official language nationally among 1,000 adults from August 9-10. The margin of error is +/-3 percentage points.
