Bloomberg, Other Gun Rights Opponents Target Milwaukee Sheriff in Primary

Michael Bloomberg and other national gun rights opponents have dumped money into the Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, primary elections in hopes of defeating pro-gun Sheriff David Clarke, Jr.

Clarke drew the ire of gun rights opponents in January 2013 when he asked Milwaukee citizens to get familiar with a firearm they could use to defend their lives during the time that passes between calling 911 and police arrival.

The Milwaukee primary is August 12th, and Fox News reports gun rights opponents are supporting police Lieutenant Chris Moews over Clarke.

Clarke beat Moews by six points in the primary race four years ago.

Bloomberg has spent $150,000 on commercials “targeting Clarke’s conservative pro-gun policies.” Bloomberg spokesman Howard Wolfson said Bloomberg “decided to get involved in the sheriff’s race because it allowed him to shape policy on a local level.”

Clarke and Moews are both Democrats, and the winner of the primary is expected to be elected sheriff in November.
