Obama: 'No American Military Solution to the Larger Crisis in Iraq'

President Obama took time off from his afternoon beach trip to address the crisis in Iraq–just prior to his fundraiser at a home in Martha’s Vineyard later this evening.

During his statement, Obama praised American forces for successfully conducting air strikes “to prevent terrorist forces from advancing to Erbil.”

He also reminded Americans of the humanitarian aid he continued to provide to the Yazidi people still trapped in the Sinjar Mountains.

Obama also called political developments in Iraq “promising,” as newly-elected President Foad Masoom appointed Haidar al-Abad as a new Prime Minister.

He did not mention current Prime Minister Mouri al-Maliki, who has deployed military forces in Baghdad since the announcement.

The President arrived to deliver his speech 23 minutes later than the scheduled time of 4:45 PM EST.
