Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) said this week will be one of the most critical weeks in the history of the republic for Americans who want to preserve the rule of law that has made America so exceptional.
President Barack Obama is reportedly intent on granting temporary amnesty and work permits to possibly eight million more illegal immigrants once Congress goes on its August recess after this week, and Sessions said Congress has a chance this week to “make it exceedingly difficult” for Obama to go forward with his plans.
In an appearance on Breitbart News Sunday, Sessions told Breitbart News Executive Chairman and host Stephen K. Bannon that any border bill that passes the Senate or the House “should have in it language that bars any president from expending any money to carry out” amnesty proposals. Sessions noted that Congress has repeatedly rejected amnesty legislation, and that is why Obama has “no power” to enact executive amnesty that is “breathtaking in its overreach.”
Calling for a “public refutation” of Obama’s proposed actions, Sessions said the American people, when “on alert and when they speak out,” can stop Obama from enacting unilateral actions that would be “plainly and utterly unlawful and unconstitutional were he to do so.”
Sessions said if “Obama eviscerates plain law” by enacting more executive actions, the next president can say that declare that even more people can come to the country illegally.
“This goes to the very core of law,” Sessions said. “And if we allow that to occur and if the president does such a thing, there is no moral authority to enforce any law in the future and all of our laws will be weakened.”
Sessions said he hopes that “every patriot will engage” this week so that “we will win this fight.”
“The American people will not allow this to happen,” Sessions said, urging listeners to pressure Democrats and Republicans. Sessions has urged Americans to melt down Congress’s phone lines to compel Congress “to vote explicitly to say the President of the United States cannot spend a dime of money… to execute any plan like this.”
Sessions has previously called on all Members of Congress to support Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) bill preventing Obama from granting amnesty to future illegal immigrants. Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) has sponsored the companion bill in the House. Sessions said last week that “how Congress chooses to act in the coming hours and days will determine whether the President succeeds in his plan to nullify the immigration laws of the United States” and warned that granting amnesty to adult illegal immigrants will create an even bigger crisis at the border.
