On July 16 the U.S. House voted to block the stringent gun control laws in Washington, D.C.

The amendment to block the laws was offered by Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY).

According to The Washington Post, Massie’s amendment was to “the House spending bill containing the District budget that would prevent the city from spending funds to enforce its local gun laws.”

Those laws include firearm registration, a “high capacity” magazine ban, an “assault weapons” ban, “and strict limitations on carrying a gun outside the home.”

Massie spoke from the House floor during a “fiery debate” on his amendment prior to the vote. He described D.C. gun control as “pure harassment” and said “strict gun control laws do nothing but prevent good people from being able to protect themselves and their families.”
