Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) believes the U.S.-Mexico border is secure because migrants are turning themselves over to Border Patrol agents.
“The border is secure,” Gutierrez said on CBS’ Face the Nation. “The fact is, the children are handing themselves over to the Border Patrol Agents, and under our laws, they must be treated.”
Gutierrez cited American exceptionalism as a reason for why the country should “protect” the illegal immigrant children flooding across the border without mentioning that one of the pillars of that exceptionalism is the rule of law.
As Breitbart News has reported, at least 57,000 illegal immigrant children have unlawfully entered the country since October of last year, and federal officials estimate that 150,000 more will next year. Border Patrol agents are being flagged down because, despite the Obama administration’s public relations campaign, the illegal immigrants believe that Border Patrol agents will give them “permisos” that will allow them to indefinitely remain in the country.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry and various local, state, and federal officials have testified that the U.S.-Mexico border has never been less secure, and terrorists and criminals are looking to exploit the porous border to do harm.
