The family of a teen shot and killed while allegedly taking part in a June 30 armed robbery is asking if killing the 16-year-old was really necessary and whether it was truly an act of self-defense.

The family does “not dispute the fact that he participated in the crime,” but they want to know why he had to be killed for doing so.

According to WHIO, 16-year-old Isiah Haggins, Jr., and an accomplice who attempted to rob a Dayton, Ohio, “Step-N-Style clothing store” on June 30. Police say one of the two suspects pulled a gun during the attempted robbery.

The store owner pulled his own gun and shot Haggins dead.

His grandmother, Kay Haggins, “wants to see Step-N-Style’s surveillance video as proof that her grandson posed a threat to the store owner.”

Haggins had “been expelled from Trotwood-Madison High School because of bad grades, behavior problems and for shoplifting.” The other suspect in the alleged armed robbery could be charged with Haggins’ death under Ohio law.
