Florida School Board Considers 'Stand Your Ground' for Students

A new expansion of Florida’s “stand your ground” law is being considered at the school board level in Duval County, where board member Jason Fischer says students “have the right to defend themselves without being disciplined by school officials.”

Outside the public school system, the state’s stand your ground law removes the victim’s obligation to retreat when under attack and protects their right to use deadly force to stop an attack that appears grave enough to be life threatening. 

Although the use of guns for lethal force is not part of the changes being presented to the Duval school board, The Florida Times-Union reports that Fischer wants Duval students to “be given the right to defend themselves”–to be “able to fight back when attacked at school.”

Fischer wants self-defense with no administrative consequence, as long as the person defending him or her self does not use “excessive force” in so doing.
