Dave Brat, who is challenging House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) in Tuesday’s primary, believes Cantor betrayed his district on amnesty and shares the blame for surge in illegal immigrant children flooding into the country.
“One you announced that kids are welcome, they’re going to head in,” Brat said on Breitbart News Sunday of Cantor’s support for giving the children of illegal immigrants amnesty and citizenship because he believes it is one of the “founding principles” of the country.
Brat, who has been surging in the polls, said Cantor has taken “zero responsibility” on the issue and blasted him for falsely claiming that he was “unwavering on immigration” when Cantor has really been “bobbing and weaving” on the issue. Brat noted that Cantor was “100% all-in” on amnesty and support for the Kids Act, the Enlist Act, and the Dream Act before one of Cantor’s top allies was ousted from a GOP Chairmanship in his district. Brat said amnesty legislation will be “right back on track after the primary is over” if Cantor prevails.
“This is the last chance [to stop amnesty],” he told host and Breitbart News Executive Chairman Stephen K. Bannon.
Cantor indicated he continues to support amnesty for illegal immigrant children in a Friday interview with a local television when he was asked about the surge of illegal immigrant children entering the United States, which Breitbart Texas has been extensively documenting.
“But I have told the President there are some things that we can work on together,” Cantor said. “We can work on the border security bill together. We can work on things like the Kids.”
Cantor was referring to the Kids Act that would grant amnesty to children who were brought illegally to the country as minors.
Brat, as he noted in a Richmond Times-Dispatch op-ed, said he could not believe that Cantor believes one of the founding principles of the country was giving citizenship to illegal immigrants to not penalize them for the mistakes of their parents. He said it was “one of the most radical pro-amnesty statements ever delivered by a sitting representative.” Law enforcement officials warned that such statements may entice more illegal immigrants to try to enter the country illegally hoping they will eventually get amnesty.
“The central policy issue in this race has become Cantor’s absolute determination to pass an amnesty bill. Cantor is the No. 1 cheerleader in Congress for amnesty,” Brat had previously written. “This is not the Republican way to fix our economy and labor markets.”
Brat said Cantor also doesn’t believe in the 10th Amendment and represents the “one party of money” that conservatives and Tea Partiers are challenging. He blasted him for his “arrogance” and elitism for only answering to the Chamber of Commerce instead of the district’s voters.
“He sold out the district,” Brat said. “In the midst of the worst labor markets that we have, he decides to deliver for the chamber instead of for the district.”
He blasted Cantor’s “arrogance” for wanting to “crush” him, which Brat said backfired because it gave him name ID to highlight Cantor’s inconsistencies and lies, which Brat said are “reverberating” around Richmond even though the hometown paper, which endorsed Cantor without mentioning anything on immigration, was “so in the tank” for Cantor.
Brat said his campaign has finally been gaining momentum after he highlighted Cantor’s amnesty support. He said “money is rolling in” now and donations are “triple what we had” previously, although the previous amount is quite low. That has allowed his campaign to put up TV and radio spots. Last week, Brat said conservative talk radio host Laura Ingraham attracted hundreds of people for a campaign appearance — and some attendees were parked in Cantor’s cul-de-sac.
As Breitbart News has been reporting, Cantor has been running away from his support of amnesty, “sending many deceptive anti-amnesty mailers” while his “website also makes no mention of his support for amnesty for illegal immigrant children and citizenship for illegal immigrants who enroll in the military.”
And last week, the We Deserve Better independent PAC hit Cantor with a 30-second spot that highlights Cantor’s support for amnesty legislation. The spot warned voters in Cantor’s district that Cantor and Obama will cut a deal to give “amnesty and citizenship” to illegal immigrants.
