On May 28 Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) said Democrats “may offer” gun control amendments to the Commerce, Justice, Science spending bill this week in response to Elliot Rodger’s Santa Barbara attacks.
Rodger stabbed three people to death in a scene law enforcement officials described as “horrific,” shot and killed three others, and tried to kill yet four others with his car.
According to USA Today, Hoyer said he does not believe the amendments will be successful because only “one party (wants to vote on this).” The Republican Party, he said, is “moving in the opposite direction.”
Hoyer specified that Democrats may add amendments “affecting background checks for gun purchases.”
USA Today says such amendments have “little chance to pass and become law, but they will serve a political purpose in an election year” by putting “lawmakers on record on gun issues.” Indeed they will. As Breitbart News reported on May 1, Independents are already “overwhelmingly” aligned with Republicans when it comes to gun rights.
