Mitt Romney Supports Minimum Wage Hike

Former Republican nominee for president of the United States Mitt Romney stated on Thursday that he endorses an increase in the minimum wage.

Although many economists assert that an increase in the minimum wage will increase unemployment, Romney claims he supports the higher wage “because frankly, our party is all about more jobs and better pay.” The former Massachusetts governor’s comment doesn’t jibe with the analysis of the Congressional Budget Office. According to the CBO, although a wage hike would result in an increase in income for some, it would simultaneously mean hundreds of thousands of workers would lose their jobs.

Romney made his remarks on Morning Joe after Republicans voted down a Senate bill that aimed to lift the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour. Aside from his support of the wage hike, the former governor said that he was excited about a number of candidates running in 2016 for president on the Republican side. “You know some of my favorites,” Romney said. “Paul Ryan, of course. I love Paul; we were a great team together. But Chris Christie and Jeb Bush and Rob Portman. The list is long. Scott Walker. There are a lot of fellows and hopefully some women, as well.”

Moreover, Romney claimed that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, a presumed Democrat presidential candidate in 2016, has a tough road ahead given her leadership as head of the State Department. Romney asserted that Clinton’s record is suspect and there are questions whether she “actually accomplished things of significance, particularly on foreign soil.” Moreover, he recounted that “the four years that she served as secretary of state were not good years for the United States of America abroad.”
