On April 16 Arizona Governor Jan Brewer (R) signed House Bill 2483–a bill “that bars local government agencies from restricting shooting on private property.”
This is the first of three bills to come out of the Arizona legislature this session.
According to The Washington Times, HB 2483 “bans cities, towns, and counties from restricting shooting of guns on private property as long as the nearest occupied structure is more than a quarter-mile away.”
Bill sponsor Rep. John Kavanagh (R-Fountain Hills) said the measure was in response to “Yavapai County’s effort to restrict shooting on property owned by a rural Prescott man.”
The measure was opposed by Rep. Karen Fann (R-Prescott), who argued that “the state should not be stepping into a local zoning issue.”
