On March 19th–the very day a Hollywood fundraiser for Senators Mark Begich (D-AK) and Mark Pryor (D-AR) was scheduled to take place–Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, and other anti-gun groups objected to raising funds for red state Democrats who voted against gun control.

According to Variety magazine, the fundraiser was scheduled to be held at the home of Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn and his wife Cindy. “Contribution levels [began] at $2,000 per person and [went] to a maximum of $10,400.”

Gun control groups sent a letter to the Horns on the afternoon of the 19th. It asked why they were raising funds for two senators who “helped a Republican minority defeat a Democratic majority and a Democratic president and vice president who worked their heart out on this chance for reform.” That chance went up in flames in April 2013.

A donor who planned to attend the event spoke on the condition of anonymity: “Support for Begich and Pryor [reflects] a more pragmatic reality of this year’s midterms for incumbents in red states: Withholding money would only increase the chance” of a Republican victory.
