On February 23rd 17-year-old Byron White allegedly killed a Seattle man for his cell phone then complained that the cell phone “was not a nicer model.”
According to The Seattle Times, White was charged as an adult on March 4th “in connection with the fatal shooting.” Other charges include “second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm and second-degree attempted robbery.”
According to court documents, White approached 54-year-old David L. Peterson in the parking lot of a pet store and tried to steal his phone. Peterson “resisted and after a struggle, prevailed.” As he walked away, he called 911 to report the attack, and White allegedly came at him again during the call.
The 911 operator could hear Peterson telling the attacker he would “not give up his phone” and that he was talking to police. The operator said the call went silent shortly thereafter. Prosecutors claim that’s when White “pulled a 9mm… pistol from his waistband and shot Peterson once in the chest.” The bullet “[struck] Peterson’s heart and [perforated] his spinal column.”
“Court documents claim White said Peterson had seen his face so ‘he had to shoot him.'” The same documents say White was “disappointed” the phone he stole “was not a nicer model.”
