Nick Garzilli, Chief Operating Officer of technology company ET3, is behind a new proposed ballot measure to stop California’s high-speed rail project. The referendum, which would prevent further issues of state bonds for the project, was approved to begin gathering signatures last week, according to Eric Young of the San Francisco Business Times. If passed, it would only allow already-approved segments in the rural Central Valley to be built.
Garzilli and his supporters must gather over 500,000 signatures by July 24. ET3, which stands for Evacuated Tube Transport Technologies, is working on an alternative to high-speed rail that is similar to the hyperloop recently proposed by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, in that both use vacuums to propel passenger capsules inside a long tube. ET3 hopes to build transportation systems far beyond California, connecting global destinations.
